Kitchen Remodelling: 10 tips to consider

The first question is: do you remodel or undergo a complete renovation? Contrary to what you may think remodelling a kitchen might not be as hard as you imagine. Your kitchen is the heart and soul of your home, so you will want it to be beautiful, efficient and comfortable. So where do you start? The ideas and suggestions below will help your kitchen remodelling project a success.

1. Use the existing space efficiently
The first step in kitchen remodelling is to always think about the functionality of your kitchen. Kitchens are all different shapes and sizes. Whether it's a Galley or U- or L-shaped kitchen you need to plan for the sink, fridge and stove. This should form a triangle, with no more than 6-8 feet between each for ease of movement. See this great Kitchen Layout Guide to get you started.
2. Storage
The biggest mistake most people make during the planning stage is to not allow for enough storage. Use every nook and cranny. If your ceilings are not too high, put overhead cabinets right up to the ceiling. Consider deep drawers for easier access to pots and pans, and include enough storage for appliances that otherwise would clutter up counter tops.
3. Lighting
Overhead lighting will not be sufficient in a kitchen. Having the light behind you will casting a shadow on the work space. You will need the lighting positioned to fall in front of you. Under-cabinet lights are a must have in the planning of a kitchen, they shine directly on to the counter tops.and are hard to maintain
4. Power
When designing a kitchen be sure there are appropriate power sources for relocated or new appliances. Many people realize too late that the supplies are not correctly positioned. You will need to measure the appliances to ensure that they fit comfortably into the allocated spaces. If a dishwasher is crammed in, it could push up against the hose and won't drain properly.
5. Space and surface
You can never have too much counter space. Choose the correct surface that's easy to work on and care for. If you decide to use tiles you will need to keep in mind that grout between tiles is hard to maintain. Stainless steel surfaces will scratch very easily. Choose the counter top using 2 key things, look and practicality.
6. Start fresh

Try not to reuse appliances or items from the old kitchen. You may think you're saving money, but an old appliance will stick out like a sore thumb in a new kitchen. Find other ways to save money. You don't need to spend $100 on a drawer handle when cheaper one will still look fantastic. The same goes for counter tops. Be strategic in your choices.

7. Safety first

Make your kitchen as safe and family-friendly as possible. Ensure that you have good visibility of the backyard and the indoor play areas. Also consider such safety conscious elements as rounded counter tops, slip-resistant flooring and ovens located at adult height to minimize the chances of accidental burns.

8. Cleaning the air

Fitting a hood above the stove helps ventilate cooking odours. There are 2 types of hoods, unventilated and vented. Use an unventilated hood if you are unable to vent cooking odours outside. The hood also needs to be the correct size for the stove you are planning to have.

9. Waste

Most people don’t plan for the garbage and recycling bins when designing a kitchen. Do you want a built-in bin cleverly disguised behind a cabinet door, or a stainless-steel bin that's positioned out of the way? You better plan for it first!

10. Flooring

When it comes to flooring, consider slip-resistance, ease of maintenance and porosity. Stone floors, which are somewhat porous, may need periodic resealing. Find out how often and do you want to deal with that process. Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they wear out faster by the fridge, stove and sink than other areas. Natural stone flooring works wonderfully, and has a earthy look and feel. The final piece of advice for kitchen remodelling is to come up with a budget and stick to it. There are a lot of line items, and if money is tight, then splurge on what is most important. You need cabinets and a fridge, but if you cook a lot, go for the best you can afford. Don’t be that person who finishes a kitchen and says, I should have got a better hob. Decide on what your needs are and then work on the design.
