How to Lay Laminate Flooring and Underlay

One of my favourite jobs as a contractor is lay laminate flooring and the reason for this is that you can see a massive change in a rooms look in a very shot period of time. Laying laminate flooring is a fairly demanding project and you'll need some decent DIY skills for it. A room should not take more than a day to do but this will also depend on the size of your room. Before you start you will need some tools to complete the job correctly.

Below is a list of tools you will need.
  • Flat pry bar
  • 6-foot level
  • Self-levelling compound
  • Pencil
  • Hand saw
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Razor knife
  • Masking tape
  • 1/4-inch spacers
  • Rubber mallet
  • Tape measure
  • Table saw
  • 2-inch finishing nails
  • Hammer
Now to start laying the laminate.

1. Place the boxes of laminate flooring in the room you are installing it into to allow it to acclimate for 24 hours. Laminate expands and contracts with temperature changes.

2. Remove the skirting from the walls. Check the floor for levelness, using a 6-foot level. Fill any low spots in the floor with a self-levelling compound.

3. Lay a plank of laminate flat on the floor up against the lower part of the door frame. Use a pencil to transfer a line onto the door frame. Trim the frame with a hand saw to give the laminate room to slide underneath the frame during installation. Trim all frames in the room.

4. Sweep up any dust and debris from the floor, using a vacuum cleaner.

5. Cover the entire floor with underlay padding, butting it directly up against the walls. Use a razor knife to cut the padding to fit. Cover all the seams with masking tape.

6. Place 10 mm spacers against the wall where you'll start laying the floor. Begin the first row, starting from the left and working to the right. Insert the tongue edge of the plank into the groove of the next plank at a 45-degree angle. When the tongue is all the way into the groove, lay it flat and it will lock into place. Lock the planks together until you are to close to the wall to lay another full plank.

7. Measure from the wall to the edge of the last plank and subtract 10 mm. Transfer that measurement onto a full plank of laminate and cut it to size. Lock the final plank in place to complete the first row. Continue this process for the remainder of the floor. Use a rubber mallet to close any gaps that may form along the way.

8. Once you have finish the flooring replace the skirting and install any door thresholds that are need.

Considering having flooring done and need a flooring contractor.
