Important Measurements for Planning Your Kitchen

If you are in the process of redesigning your kitchen, it can be difficult to come up with the perfect design scheme. The issue may be that you don't want to settle for one specific look for fear that the colour scheme will become out-dated within the year. While kitchens typically don't go out of style that fast, you can guarantee that your kitchen will still look modern for years to come by focusing on some important measurements and spatial requirements for the placement of areas about the kitchen.

A good place to start in figuring out what are the best options for your kitchen is to focus on the fact that you want your kitchen to work for you. This means that the items that you need on a regular basis should be easy to reach and you shouldn't have to go out of your way to reach things. Having to squeeze around areas to prepare a meal is not the best idea either. Here are some ideas to help you avoid all of that.

Passageway Space

If you want to make sure that there is enough room to both manoeuvre and cook a meal in the kitchen, you need to make sure that there is enough passageway space. An ideal figure for movement space should be at least 1 metre for 1 cook and 1.2 metres if there will be 2 people cooking in the kitchen.

Worktops

If you are selecting the best height for your worktops, consider about 90 centimetres. This should make them comfortable enough for people of average height to use. If your counter includes a sink area, then you should make sure that there is at least 60 centimetres on either side of the sink so that there is enough room to dry dishes or prepare food that was rinsed in the sink. This also leaves room for dirty dishes after a meal before they get washed.

Stove Area

You should also make sure that there is ample area around your stove. Try to dedicate at least 40 centimetres of space on either side so that you have enough room to place the foods that you plan to prepare on the stove. This also makes a space for some quick preparation if something extra is needed before putting the food on the stove.
