THE ROOF IS LEAKING HOW TO FIND IT AND FIX IT?

A leaking roof is one of the most common problems connected to the roof. Following our infographic above, we will explain how to find the source of the leak and fix it.

Find water stains or mould?  Those two are your best indications for a leak. Follow the stains or the mould up to your attic, where you probably will find more. Usually, stains are hard to spot so don't be hesitant to move some furniture around and feel the surfaces with your hand. Now it is time to find the actual damage that is causing the leak.    The leak is not always right above the stain. Have in mind that the water finds ways through the hollow spaces of the roof with the help of gravity and it doesn't go out right below the hole that it comes in. So the hole in the roof is probably a bit higher than the actual leak. So spend some time to locate it.  If you are having trouble, grab a hoe, go to the roof and start pouring water on it. Ask a family member or a neighbour to stay in the attic and tell you when it starts leaking. A bit of fake rain can do wonders. Usually, the source of the leak is:

  • Corroded valleys
  • Plumbing vent boots
  • Broken vents
  • Hole in the roof
  • Damaged shingles
  • Clogged gutter

Now try to fix them. Usually, some of the things can be fixed by your own two hands. Just be careful and use the right tools. If you are not confident in your roof fixing skills, don't hesitate and call the nearest roofing companies in London! You can simply look up the best roofing services in your area.

Did you find dry rot?

Dry rot is one of the worst enemies of a good roof, so you better remove it as soon as possible. It is really easy to spot. You will notice the wood just falling apart, almost crumbling. All you need to do - take down the rotten planks and replace them with new healthy ones. Again, if you don't feel confident enough to do it on your own, call a roofing contractor.

Are icicles falling from your roof?

Looks pretty but it carries a potential risk, and it could lead to some bad damage.  The best thing you could do - take your roof rake (if you don’t have one, buy one from the nearest hardware store) and carefully take down the snow and ice buildup on your roof. Make sure you don’t get hit by an icicle and call the kids to watch. After that, have a snow fight.

You hear strange noises from the roof?

Probably critters! The first and best thing you should do is clean up. Clean the attic, gutter, rooftop, everything. Find and seal the entry points from which animals could crawl into your house. If that doesn't work, you can use detergents, and the last option is placing some traps. Remember to be humane.  Now if everything is fixed, feel free to open up one cold refreshing beer.
