Basic Interior Design Rules - Part 2

In the last article, we covered some of the basics of interior design so that you could familiarize yourself with these concepts in order to design your space. Here are a few more rules that you should be aware of when it comes to interior design.

Make Sure Your Room Has Adequate Seating

If you are designing a room for guests to visit, you should make sure that you have adequate seating. If you are working with a small space it is very important that you measure carefully to make sure that all of the elements of your room will fit. You should also make sure that you choose high quality furniture that will last. Choose fabrics and patterns for your furniture that you are sure that you will not get sick of. Slipcovers can offer a change of pace if you do get sick of the furniture patterns.

Go for Traditional Styles

If you are buying expensive pieces of furniture for your room, it is a good idea to stick with traditional or timeless ideas. By choosing eccentric colours or patterns, your room could end up looking dated in just a few years. This could lead to a huge waste of money as you become embarrassed of the designs and want to replace the furniture or other decorative items when. By sticking to traditional styles at least for the most expensive items, you can save money down the road.

Add Some Black

When it comes to interior design, every room should have at least a touch of black. Black can add depth to a room in a way that other colours simply cannot. Whether it is through a decorative item, a wall or piece of furniture, figure out how to incorporate some black into the room. Make sure to use it sparingly as too much black can make a room seem really dark.

Layering

Layering is a concept that can make a room look more comfortable. It is an excellent concept to use in a bedroom, family room or any other space that you might use for relaxation. To give an example of layering, trying applying an area rug to a room that already has carpeting. You can also mix and match colours and fabric textures for extra contrast. Layering is also excellent if you would like to add a new colour to your space but do not want it to be a part of the permanent design of the room.

Add Your Unique Point of View

While design does have rules, it is important not to forget that you need to make your home your own. At the end of the day, you are the one that has to live there! You should make sure that your personal tastes, hobbies and passions are reflected your home. You can do this with decorative items, colours and patterns. If you have specific things that you like, figure out how you can work them into the design for your room.
