Basic Interior Design Rules - Part 1

When it comes to design, it can seem like there are no rules at all. However, if you are trying to create an interior design that is aesthetically pleasing yet functional, it is a good idea to follow some basic rules. Here are the basic rules of interior design that you should be aware of.

Designing for Function

When it comes to interior design, functionality should come first. Many people make mistakes when they don't consider functionality that are not revealed until they actually start using the space. To avoid these sort of problems, taking time to measure the space and the furniture that will go in it will save you a lot of headaches. There is no need to commit to the first design idea that you come up with. Instead take some time to play around with your layout ideas and then figure out what the the optimal layout for your space. You can even consider alternatives for furniture in order to make the room layout work better.

Don't Forget Decorative Items

When many people design rooms, they become so focused on making sure that the walls, floor and furniture look create that they forget to add decorative items. Decorative items can serve as the focal point for a room bringing together all of the elements of a room. In addition, you should not hesitate to incorporate new decorative items into your space. Don't feel obligated to use all of the old items that you've decorated your space with in the space as they may just create clutter.

If you are not sure which decorative items will work best in your space, refer to some design magazines or visit some furniture showrooms to get some ideas. Take careful notice how the items are placed about the space as well. Placement of the items is just as important as the items that you have selected themselves.

Use Vignettes

The word vignette refers to a grouping of objects or furniture when it comes to interior design. Creating vignettes can be done with artwork on the wall, small pieces of furniture or even decorative items. By creating vignettes, you can incorporate items into the space that would be too small to be effective for the design of the space on their own. In addition, you are creating focal points in the space that will draw the eyes.

If you are not sure how to create a vignette, pick just a few of your favourite items and figure out what they have in common that you can use to group them together. Then simply place the items together in a section of your room to create a unique look.
