Cleaning and Disinfect your Home Against Covid-19

The novel corona virus is unlike any other viruses or is it as tolerable as the common flu. Those who have caught the virus and battled with it can testify to its terrible effects on the body. It’s like Influenza but a hundred times worse with a touch of pneumonia for some. The virus is most dangerous when it has attached itself to weakened hosts - the elderly, those with existing medical conditions, and a weak immune system.

Living with the new age virus means ramping up hygiene, social distancing, and getting vaccinated as soon as possible. Also, protecting yourself can just be the most selfless act you can do right now as keeping yourself healthy and virus-free is keeping those around you safe from contracting the virus from you.

The home must be the safest place to be during the pandemic, if it’s not, then you are never safe. Today, eating outside, shopping, walking at the park or simply sightseeing in public places can be

Now, while you keep yourself safe and healthy behind the walls of your home, you should still be cautious and well-prepared. Here are some ways you can clean and disinfect your home against COVID-19:

1. Use tested and approved disinfectants

Not all disinfectants can kill the virus nor can disinfectants advertised as effective against COVID-19. There is a list provided by the World Health Organization listing all the disinfectants that can kill the virus which should be followed by every household. Using anything else besides these products can put you and your family in danger.

Before going to the supermarket to buy cleaning supplies, research which brand or what products have been approved by the health experts.

The most common and effective disinfectants used in regular and healthcare settings are sodium hypochlorite at 1 part household bleach to 49 parts water and alcohol at 70 to 90 percent.

2. Hire professional cleaners

Cleaning may sound like an easy task to do, but cleaning and disinfecting during a pandemic is best done by professionals. Certified cleaners exist for a reason - they are knowledgeable, experienced, and well-equipped. The average homeowner will not have all the tools and supplies necessary to combat the novel coronavirus and not all homeowners have the budget for daily usage of disinfectants and cleaning supplies.

With the help of a professional cleaner, you will be able to keep your house clean and virus-free without having to worry about running out of supplies and battering expensive cleaning appliances.

3. Disinfect regularly

Cleaning and disinfection should be a regular task to keep up with how quickly the virus is able to spread. At a single touch of an infected individual, the virus can contaminate daily objects and be potent for up to 3 days depending on the type of surface. At a wheeze or cough or simply talking, an infected individual can spread the virus in the air. According to a study made by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences under controlled conditions, fluids released through talking can remain suspended in the air for 8 to 14 minutes.

4. Keep outsiders out

At this moment, your home is only for you and your family. Guests should not be welcome at any time. However, if gatherings can’t be avoided, make sure that your home is properly disinfected before and after the gathering. This is for your safety and also your guests. Social distancing and wearing of masks together with necessary precautions should also be observed.

Local governments have released proper procedures concerning small and mass gatherings which may vary depending on your location. At all times, you must consult your local government before hosting or even joining events that exceed the advisable number of people per area.

5. Prep surfaces with soap and water

Using disinfectants right away is not advisable. For some disinfectants to be effective, the surface to be cleaned must be free from dirt and dust. Using soap and water to a surface is the best way to prepare it for disinfection.

Soap is also an effective disinfectant that is advised for hand hygiene more than sanitizers and alcohol. This is because soap consists of a type of fat that attracts the lipid bilayer of the coronavirus which is vital to its survival. With the lipid bilayer of a coronavirus, it becomes inactive and harmless.

6. Proper Hygiene

Regular cleaning and disinfecting of your home is not enough. It is also a must to keep yourself properly cleaned and disinfected before entering your home.

Isopropyl alcohol 70 percent is recommended for hand hygiene when soap and water is not available. It’s important to bring it with you when you go out of your house to be able to always keep your hands clean. As you should know, our hands are the most common contact point between infected objects and our bodies.

Avoid using alcohol at higher concentration because they don’t work. 70 percent alcohol is recommended because it has the right amount of water to keep the alcohol actively disinfecting for the right amount of time.

7. Follow Label Instructions

Following label instructions is not only important to attain the highest effectiveness of these products. It’s also important to follow instructions provided by the manufacturers to eliminate the risk of accidental poisoning. Some of these products are dangerous to ingest and inhale at certain amounts.

It’s a small price to pay…

Cleaning and disinfecting your home regularly can be an exhausting task and may also be quite costly if done yourself, but it’s only a small price to pay compared to the expenses that come with COVID-19 treatment. In addition, keeping yourself safe from the virus is also contributing to the decline of the spread of the invisible disease.
