Adhesive Laminate: What is it?

Laminate is the covering use in kitchen cabinets and doors. It is a form of plastic, which is extremely hard wearing, but it can lose it's resists to staining and scratches over time. If your laminate is starting to show it’s age, and you are considering to replace your kitchen cabinets or doors, you may want to consider re-laminating. Re-laminating can be cost effective and isn’t very difficult to do as a DIY project.

How do I do this?

  1. Clean the surface; make sure the surface is clear of and dirt.
  2. Measure the area; give 20cm additional on all side for trimming. This may be more depending on the thickness of the door or cabinet.
  3. Stick the adhesive laminate by starting from one side. Use a scraper to push out bubble as you go along.
  4. Stick the edges, cut the corners like you would with rapping paper, and stick the edges down. Use a hairdryer or heat gun to mould the laminate to fit the edges perfectly. Do the longer sides first and then the shorter sides.
  5. Use the hairdryer to remove bubbles and smooth out the edges.

What Will it Cost?

As for the cost, it depends on many factors: dimensions, sizes, number of drawers/doors, shelves, designs and how many corners, etc. So there won’t be a fixed costs, as adhesive laminate is sold in metres. Based on estimation only, a normal kitchen cabinets should be in a range of $350-$650, supply and install. But this cost can reach 1K+ in a HDB and 2K+ in a landed property.

Re-fabrication of whole kitchen area may be in a range of $8500-$18500, yet again depending on dimensions, designs, materials used, etc. (Excluding hacking & disposal of existing cabinets/wardrobes and kitchen worktops).

Based on experience, re-lamination is about 5%-10% costs over hacking/disposal/re-fabrication with our laminate.
