Painting Jobs: Things You Should Know
There are a few things that you should consider before starting a repainting job. What purpose will the space serve? What direction does the space face? How big is your space? What is the mood that you want to create? The main rule is that colours that are lighter will make a room seem bigger while dark colours will make a room seem smaller. If you are trying to decide on a colour scheme for the room go with monochromatic (shades of a single colour), harmonious (use of similar colours) or contrasting (the use of two very different colours).
Some Painting Job Techniques
- Stencilling: Stenciling is a technique that lets you spice up a plain wall with custom colour and pattern even if your artistic skills are minimal. To use a stencil, you simply tape it in place on the wall with painter's tape and fill in the open section with paint in your chosen colour
- Sponging: There are not many options easier than sponging, so it's a good choice for beginners. Start with a solid base coat and use a damp sea sponge to apply the glaze in another colour on top to provide a subtle texture to the wall. Because of the texture sponging produces, it can camouflage damaged walls or areas that see heavy traffic like your kitchen, bathroom or hallway.
- Ragging: If you want to give your walls a faded, textured finish, ragging is an option. This is similar to sponging, but the texture is usually more obvious with ragging due to the folds, which create an uneven pattern. Crumple the rag up into a loose ball to create the necessary folds and ridges. You can reshape the rag to give your walls a random, textured look.
- Frottage: Use Frottage for an organic, worn look, The process involves applying coloured glaze to a piece of paper and pressing the paper to a wall that's been prepared with a base coat. When you peel the paper off, the surface has a beautifully mottled appearance.

Paint Types Used
Paint comes in many different types and the type to use depends on the area that is to be painted. Outdoor areas should be painted by using exterior paint that can handle the elements. Exterior paints commonly include protection against UV rays. The interior paints should be selected based on the function of the space. Bathrooms and other wet areas of the home need to use paints that are more resistant and can handle moisture, such as gloss and semi-gloss paints. Living areas can use flat surface paint. If you want to paint that can stand up to wear and tear, go with a wash-and-wear paint.
For the interior of the home, you will also find many different special paint finishes. These finishes can include, suede, pearl, metallic, colour washing, rag rolling, sponging, and more. There are so many options available that getting the assistance of a professional is a good idea for selecting the right look for your home.
