Getting Quotes From Kitchen Renovation Contractors
Planning to do a kitchen renovation can be a very exciting experience, but can also be very challenging. There are many challenges to over come, and they start the moment you decide to get quotes for kitchen contractors. There are also many decisions that need to be made. What style of kitchen do you want? What can you afford? When do you want to start?
One way to help you with these decisions is to hire a kitchen contractor, but you don't want to rely on just the one contractors opinion, or a single quote. The best thing to do is to get advice and quotes from at least 3 kitchen contractors. In this way you can ensure that you get a fair and accurate idea of cost, and you will most likely get the best kitchen for your budget.
The Cost
You can have two kitchen designs with exactly the same number of cabinets, but the total cost can differ dramatically. One quote can cost as little as $2000, while that same kitchen made from a different material can cost as much as $10,000. The difference in the costs is due to the type of visible surface materials used.
Here are some examples using different worktop materials:
- Laminate worktops are the least expensive. Getting a designer laminate worktop will cost a little more.
- Solid wood worktops will cost about 10-15 percent more than laminate, but can be 20 percent more depending on the type of timber and the finish.
- Engineered quartz worktops cost four to six times more than laminate.
- Granite worktops are mostly the same as engineered quartz, but the price can go up depending on the type of granite you choose.
- Stainless steel worktops are the most expensive, and can be nearly 10 times the price of laminate.
Keep in mind that the cost differences also apply for doors, drawer fronts, side panels, cabinets and all accessories in a kitchen renovation. Type of finishes like, melamine is the cheapest, while a gloss polyurethane surface finish is one of the most expensive.
Here is a list of things that most people forget about:
- The quality of the drawer runners, the door hinges and handles.
- Cheap drawers will have a thin bottom panel that will bow and even pop out under a heavy loads.
- Cheap low quality kitchen cabinets are stapled together, while mid-range kitchen cabinets are often constructed using screws. Custom made cabinets will be dowelled and glued.
You will need to keep all these factors in mind when getting quotes from kitchen contractors. It's important that you choose the right materials you want before getting quotes. This is the only way you can compare "apples with apples."
