What is a Handyman?

A handyman is a person skilled in a wide range of repairs, typically around the home. These tasks include, repair work, maintenance work, both interior and exterior and include light plumbing jobs such as fixing a leaky toilet or light electric jobs such as changing a light fixture. Tasks range from minor to major, from unskilled to highly skilled, and include painting, drywall repair, remodelling, minor plumbing work, minor electrical work, household carpentry and furniture assembly. Most handymen will charge by the hour, and they typically work as quickly as they are able to. Some Handymen will charge extra fees for emergency call outs. Handymen also pride themselves on coming up with innovative, inexpensive solutions to problems to keep theirs and your costs down.

How do I find the right handyman?

Not every handyman will have all the skills necessary to do everything around your house. One time jobs and smaller projects are typically what a handyman is used to doing. Finding a handyman with a wide range of skills will typically be more expensive and you may be able to save money by finding a handyman who specialises in just your particular needs. For example: you need a room painted, hiring a handyman who specialises in woodworking  and electrical might prove to be more costly. If you have a large list of items that need repairing or installing, choosing a handyman with a range of skills that are suited to your list could save time and money in the end. If you are on a tight budget you could consider doing some of the things on the list yourself, this can also help save on additional costs and time.

3 things you should do before hiring a handyman.
  1. Getting references is important. This will help ensure your handyman is trustworthy and will do a good job.
  2. Always get a written estimate that includes the price and time for completion. Never accept a verbal estimates.
  3. Check the handyman's credentials. If you need plumbing or electrical work done ensure they are licensed. The same will apply for HDB.  Read more about licensing, Contractors: what are their licensing requirements?
In conclusion hiring a handyman can be very useful in getting a lot of those smaller home improvement tasks done. hiring a handyman can also be a much more affordable option than hiring a licensed contractor. Remember always check references and skill levels before making a final decision and be sure you are comfortable with the handyman you are hiring. Remember that this person will have access to your home so you want to feel secure in your choice.
