What Is Carpentry?

If you own a home or flat, chances are at some point you will require the services of a carpenter. But what is a carpenter exactly. Here are some basic facts about carpentry so that you can understand who you need to hire in order to get the job done.

Carpentry Basics

Carpentry is the art of working with wood in order to create and maintain building, furniture or other objects. Carpentry includes several different types. However, the main types of carpentry are rough carpentry and finish carpentry.

Finish Carpentry

Finish carpentry involves carpentry work that will be visible once a building has been completed. The jobs that a finish carpenter performs include decking, flooring, building staircases, installing doors and windows and installing trim and moulding.

Rough and Structural Carpentry

For rough carpentry, this type of carpentry involves jobs that do not require a neat finish. Structural carpentry is the most common type of rough carpentry and these carpenters work on erecting components of a building including beams, posts and rafters. Rough carpenters can also perform roofing and framing jobs.

Other Types of Carpentry

Some other types of carpentry are formwork, cabinetmaking, trim, green, scenic and ship's carpentry. These types of carpentry involve even further specialisation.

Formwork, Cabinetmaking, and Trim Carpentry

Formwork carpentry involves creating and dismantling the formwork needed for pouring concrete. Cabinetmaking carpentry focuses on building cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms of the home. Furniture making is also part of cabinetmaking carpentry. Trim carpentry focuses on installing trims and mouldings.

Green, Scenic and Ship's Carpentry

Green carpentry is carpentry that is focused on using green materials and methods for doing carpentry. A scenic carpentry expert specialises in building scenery and sets such as those for media productions. Ship's carpentry focuses on shipbuilding, maintenance and repair. These carpenters work on both steel and wooden ships.
